April, 2006 A DVD of still life images documenting the conditions of St. Bernard Parish seven months after the rage of Hurricane Katrina ravaged this region. This moving documentary records the overwhelming devastation, lack of attention and broken promises made by our government to bring this area back. Photographer Stacey Mills and her husband, Brian Mills, traveled to New Orleans in April of 2006 to volunteer with Habitat for Humanity to help rebuild this area. What they found was absolutely devastating.
"When people think of Habitat for Humanity, they think of construction and building homes. Unfortunately, there is no place to rebuild homes...yet. What's left of these displaced residents homes must be completely gutted, down to the frames, and disgarded. All contents. All furniture, collectibles, valuables, sentimental trinkets and photographs, anything you can imagine from your own home...and your neighbor's. Debris, mud, silt and oil must be removed. The job being overtaken by volunteers is staggering. Help is needed in every capacity. These areas still have no electricity or running water, yet the question still gets asked, 'Why don't these people do it themselves? What is taking them so long to get up and do it themselves? Where are these people?' The harsh reality is, these displaced residents are somewhere else. They are trying to start over completely with little to nothing. Blessed to get out with their lives. Continuing to pay a mortgage on a home that no longer exists. Making desperate phone calls to their insurance companies inquiring about payouts that still haven't been made. Or challenging meager payouts that may have been a fraction of what was promised on a policy that has been paid on for 35 or more years. Some are still waiting for the hallowed FEMA trailers. They are relocating their families. Parents are enrolling their children in different schools, estranged from family, friends and familiarity. They are looking for and hopefully finding new jobs, since their previous jobs and livelihoods have been washed away as well. They are mustering up every ounce of courage and strength they can, holding their sanity and their families together under the financial and emotional stress that has come with the traumatic events of and surrounding Hurricane Katrina."
